BY THE HAIR ALCHEMIST

It’s important to choose a hair care routine that will leave your hair extensions feeling refreshed for longer. In this blog, multi-award winning salon The Hair Alchemist talks about why for years they trust Neäl & Wølf shampoo for hair extensions.

We wanted to introduce our clients to a hair extension shampoo range that extended the lifespan of their hair extensions, kept them soft, silky and free from tangles and didn’t cause them to slide out.

We tested eight leading brands in the salon, it was almost like ‘tinder for hair extensions’ trying to find a perfect match. We swiped left on every single brand except one; Neäl & Wølf.

No harmful sulphates or parabens

The Neäl & Wølf shampoo range came up with top marks against eight other professional haircare brands. With many supposed sulphate free, silicone free and paraben free shampoos designed for hair extensions in the industry, it can be hard to choose the one that is true to its word. The ingredients in many other brands contain a high amount of harmful silicone which can make hair extensions dull and lifeless over time. Learn more about the effects of sulphate and paraben products: Harmful Ingredients in Hair Products to Avoid

Neäl & Wølf shampoo and conditioner is free from harmful ingredients like sulphate, paraben, DEA and TEA. This allows you to keep your hair extensions, body and natural hair in great condition, leaving you with gorgeous guilt-free locks. Find out more about the Neäl & Wølf promise: Commitment

No Slippage

Then there is the ‘oil problem’. With many brands choosing heavy oils as their main moisturising ingredient, we found our clients were losing too many hair extensions. Too much of this oil causes the polymers to break down in the bonds and this can cause shedding, a total nightmare when your client has just invested in her new hair extensions.

Instead of overusing oils, Neäl & Wølf shampoo uses a delicate balance of softening agents so that hair extensions can stay firmly in place, including these include shea butter. In some products, oils like argan oil and camellia seed oil are used, however this is only present enough to create a silky-smooth finish - not enough to cause slippage.

No drying or matting

Finally, the luxurious range doesn’t contain any sodium laureth sulphate (SLES) or sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS). Trichologists refer to these ingredients as foaming agents or ‘sulphate nasties.’ So, we didn’t have to worry about our clients’ hair extensions drying out, matting or breaking on the ends.

The Neäl & Wølf GUARD Heat Protection Spray uses a film-forming polymer that guards cuticles from moisture loss, keeping hair extensions healthy and hydrated. This is best-used alongside their HERØ Ionic Hair dryer which dries hair fast to prevent heat damage.

The brand products come in beautifully designed packaging and a range of stunning colours that our clients love. If you are looking for a tried and tested hair extension shampoo then Neäl & Wølf has been our trusted favourite for half a decade, the ultimate in affordable luxury. What is the best shampoo for hair extensions?

Has The Hair Alchemist left you feeling inspired? Laura Elliott, head of education at Neäl & Wølf has shared some of her thoughts and recommendations on choosing the right shampoo to keep your tresses healthy.

It is crucially important to choose the best shampoo for your hair extensions to stand the test of time. Did you know the most popular type of hair extension is a bonded extension? Unlike hair extensions that are sewn or taped to the hair, these extensions contain a keratin bond. The keratin protein is heated and melts so that the extension is fixed to your own hair making it look more natural - this often requires more care and regular treatment to ensure your hair stays healthy.

No matter what colour, length or style of hair extensions you choose, it's important to wash them correctly with the right shampoo and conditioner to avoid breaking the bonds and fading the extension.

HYDRATE Cleansing Shampoo and Conditioner

The HYDRATE range contains a powerful blend of ingredients to provide intense moisture to the hair, including shea butter and panthenol. This reduces frizz and static, keeping your hair smooth, shiny and manageable. Browse the full range: HYDRATE Moisture Collection

BLONDE Purple Shampoo and Conditioner

For blonde and lighter hair, we would recommend using purple shampoo. This has a violet pigment that neutralises brassy tones, keeping your hair extensions looking salon-fresh for longer. This is particularly important for maintaining the same colour across your natural hair and extensions. However, human hair extensions are naturally drier than hair attached to the scalp, so because of this you may need to dilute your purple shampoo with a regular shampoo of your choice; this will help prevent the extensions grabbing on to the purple tone.  Shop now: BLONDE Purple Shampoo and Conditioner

DAILY Cleansing Shampoo and Conditioner

The DAILY range uses a wheat protein to boost the moisture in your hair, taming flyaways. The use of liquid shea butter also adds shine, leaving you with manageable, healthier-looking tresses. This gives a gentle, nourishing clean that isn’t harmful to your hair extensions. Browse the range: DAILY Cleansing Shampoo and Conditioner
