This year’s ‘it’ autumn hair trends focus on volume, face framing and polished blow dries, according to our head of education Laura Elliott. TikTok’s it-girls have paved the way for this autumn’s hairstyles, with the likes of Hailey Bieber, Matilda Djerf and Sofia Richie influencing many of the trends. In this blog, we will share our thoughts on the top hair trends we predict will be everywhere this season.#

1. Lobs (long bobs)

As we move into the autumn winter seasons, long bobs that sit just below the collar bone will be a popular trend. Lobs are great for those who want to make the chop but aren’t quite daring enough to go for a shoulder grazing bob. The lob is also much easier to style and manage and is just long enough to be easily pulled back for a sleek updo.

The lob is wearable for the majority of face shapes, from round to triangular. To create further shape and movement in a lob, volume is key. We would recommend using a product like our TEXTURE spray that provides long-lasting hold and gives dimension to your look. Shake well, hold up to 30cm away and spray each section of your hair. 2. The fox cut

The wolf cut, a shaggy, more robust cut that incorporated choppier layers and jagged edges is still popular. But this year, the fox cut, otherwise known as the wolf cut’s sleek younger sister, will take the crown. This is more subtle and cleaner than the wolf cut, with layers that aren’t obvious.

We’ve noticed an increase in referencing the likes of Matilda Djerf for high volume 70s and 90s hair, which is where the fox cut comes in. The cut is great for those with finer hair as it uses traditional layering techniques to create the illusion of thicker, voluminous hair. For those wanting to incorporate subtle fringes, this is the perfect cut to do so. It effortlessly frames the face to give more dimension without any choppy cuts which means it works well for those with longer faces.

The upcoming hair trend is also fairly easy to style, as it just requires a sleek blow dry. We’d suggest applying a product like our GUARD Heat Protection Spray and then using our HERØ Ionic Hair Dryer to dry the hair in sections whilst combing with a round brush.

3. Sleek up dos

Slick back hairstyles, such as the sleek pony, bun and braid, have been popular for a while, thanks to influencers from catwalks and editorial fashion, and it seems they’re here to stay this autumn. Sleek up dos are extremely versatile and can be worn in both formal and informal situations to elevate your overall look.

To make the sleek up do kinder to your hair, apply a hair treatment or hair mask to slick it back for easy and multitasking haircare. Use a solution like our HYDRATE Moisture Mask, focusing on the mids and the ends of the hair. Pull back each hair strand with a boar bristle brush and secure in place with a hair tie. For an extra layer of protection, use a strong hairspray to keep hair looking perfect for longer. Simply spray in a sweeping motion approximately 15cm from the hair. 4. Curtain bangs and birkin bangs

We predict there will be a focus on framing the face this season with the help of curtain bangs and birkin bangs. With the popularity of the fox cut and voluminous blow outs, we’ve been noticing increases in requests for curtain and birkin bangs within our salons. ‘Birkin bangs’ are essentially a full fringe that is feathered out with light layers, making it less heavy and more wearable than the traditional full fringe. Alternatively, curtain bangs part in the centre.

To create these styles use a styling spray like our UPLIFT Voluming Hair Mist before blow drying with a rounded brush. We suggest blow drying in alternate directions using a to create that relaxed ‘just woke up’ look. You don’t want these bangs to be too straight or structured, as this can make the hair appear flat. 5. Deep brown hair

Embrace the colours of autumn by opting for brown hair this season. This colour is always popular in the cooler months as it brings warmth to your look, tying in with the cosy vibes that autumn brings with it. With the time of year for partying approaching, brown hair also gives an air of luxury glam that can’t be matched.

Darker hair looks best when it has a healthy shine, as this gives hair depth and dimension. We would recommend washing hair with a specialised nourishing shampoo like our HYDRATE Moisture Shampoo, then applying our GLOW Super Shine Spray across the hair. 6. Cowgirl braids

Champion the western aesthetic this autumn. Cowgirl braids are an iconic style for longer hair, featuring two beautiful braids that run down the back of your tresses. These are ideal for everyday wear, but can be embellished with accessories for occasions. Rustic colours like browns and red are synonymous with this season, so it makes sense that cowboy styles like braids can finish off the look.

To create this style, start by parting the hair down the middle and divide the hair into two equal sections. Divide the first section into three parts and plait together, before securing with a hair tie. Repeat with the other section. For a finishing touch, keep hair in place with our  FIX Hold & Shine Hairspray and tie ribbons around the end of the hair. Looking to go for the complete cowgirl look? 7. Falling curls

One trend that is here to stay this season is big, voluminous hair. Curls can add an air of elegance to your autumn style, as they cascade downwards like falling leaves. This look appears effortless, creating a relaxed flowing feel that complements cosy jumpers and plaid shirts.

Darker evenings means more time for hair prep! Create heatless curls by applying a product like our VELVET Nourishing Hair Oil to damp hair. Section the hair, twist it at the front and leave it overnight. The next day, unravel and brush through with a round brush. To give your hair even more lift, add volumising products to your hair washing routine. Our solutions use silk proteins for a smooth finish, and can be applied by massaging through the hair before rinsing. Shop now: AMPLIFY Volumising Shampoo & Conditioner

8. Fiery red hair

Red is a colour that primarily features in autumn through falling leaves, toasty log fires and bonfire night. This creates the perfect excuse to use the colour in your hair! Stand out with light tones like strawberry blonde or a deeper, more daring burgundy shade to bring heat to the cooler months.

To achieve this look, start by using our Hair Colour Shade Chart for inspiration, before finding your closest Neäl & Wølf salon with our handy Tool. We would recommend asking for our GLAZE true demi toner, which includes squalene that leaves hair hydrated. This leaves hair with a stunning shine, as well as removing unwanted tones.
